Grace was the second child born to her parents who were married and in an exclusive relationship. She lived with both parents until the death of her father in 2003. Grace then stayed with her mother until 2009 when she moved to live with her grandmother. Her mother is a peasant farmer and struggled to provide for her family’s needs; the paternal grandmother of the children has been helping her with school fees. Since the grandmother works at New Hope Uganda, she asked the mother if Grace could live with her so she could attend school at New Hope Uganda. Grace was given a place in our primary school and now our secondary school. The mother visits Grace at New Hope Uganda and Sophie also visits to her mother during the long holidays. Esther’s father died in 2008, and Esther has never met her mother. When her father died, Esther was left to stay with her grandmother, but she could not afford to pay for Esther’s school fees, so she was brought to live with her auntie. The auntie is a peasant farmer and grows mainly food crops for the family. She takes care of 8 other children and the responsibility is overwhelming for her. Since they live near Kasana, she came to ask for help with Esther’s education. Since joining our secondary school, we have learned that Esther is artistic, respectful, joyful, and outgoing. Denis has always lived with his mother, with no support from the father, who is still living but very sickly. When the mother became a Christian, the father who is Muslim, refused to have anything more to do with her. The mother is a peasant farmer, she still had two adult daughters and young son from her previous marriage living at home. She struggles to provide for her family’s needs. There is no money for schooling. Denis has worked his way steadily up through our schools. He is now in 9th Grade and would like to become a doctor in future. She has struggled to educate the children, so she came to Kasana Children’s Center seeking help with Deborah’s schooling. Adam was the seventh child born to his parents who were in a traditional marriage. Adam lived with both his parents until they separated in 2006. In November of 2017, his father died of cancer. Adam’s mother works as a cook at a nearby hospital but earns little income and is unable to afford Adam’s school fees. She came to New Hope Uganda for help with Adam’s education.
Because of the living conditions at home (there were many other family members living in a small house) Adam was placed in Ebenezer family onsite and is attending our secondary school. Since joining our sponsorship program we have learned that Adam is humble, enjoys playing soccer, and would like to become a banker in the future.

Gavin was the second child born to his parents who were not married but living together. The father also had other wives. Gavin lived with both parents until 2007 when his father died in a car accident. Gavin continued to live with his mother until 2017 when he and three of his siblings moved to live with his aunt who lives near to KCC. The aunt has a small piece of land to grow food and a small business selling charcoal.
