Investment Year (IY)
The Mission:
For our children to develop knowledge, skills and character.
Overview of Program
To better equip our children for all God has for their futures after finishing S4 (the last year of our New Hope Academy), each of our students takes a year away from academic study, an “Investment Year”. After the year, the students resume school with either ‘A’ levels or vocational training. The Investment Year (IY) challenges our student’s personal and cultural assumptions training them to evaluate new experiences and information with a Bible-centered worldview. IY also teaches our students real-world skills that will help them be more successful in the path they choose and are advantageous when applying for jobs or running their own businesses.
Program Specifics:
Each student does three work placements: one at New Hope, one at an outside organization or business, and the third is decided upon by the student and staff. Placements are arranged to reflect what students are most interested in doing in the future in order to confirm their plans or change them.
Training is given in finance, first-aid, developing a cv, business etiquette, basic computer skills, Veritas Bible study, public speaking and more. In addition to each student running a small business themselves, the 2010 IY students have started a small coffee business giving students opportunity to develop leadership and teamwork skills. Students also attend several retreats and grow through a mentoring relationship. The mentor serves as a supporter and role model.
Investment Year Goals
For each young adult leaving S4 of New Hope Academy to be individually and uniquely PREPARED for “every good work.” To DISCOVER their God-given gifts and talents. To BE CONFIDENT that they are headed into the career God has called them to. To PREVENT students from entering a career field they know nothing about, only to find out they do not like that career choice. To PROVIDE them with experience that will enable them to excel in the courses they will later take. To EQUIP them to be excellent and productive citizens with far more skills than one degree or course could offer. To LEARN more about the Lord, more about the world around them, and more about what it means to be an independent adult. To SPEND TIME with their parents and counselors and other staff who love them and want to invest in them. To BLESS others here at Kasana and across Uganda!
ALL FOR THE GLORY OF THEIR HEAVENLY FATHER!!
